Happy {belated} Valentine’s Day to everyone. We have added another member to our family. A returning member, Barbara Brown. Welcome back Barb. There were 5 guests for our meeting and according to my sign in sheet, 45 members present. Our total membership now stands at 74. Have a great month you guys. Thanks, Pam Larsen
Thanks, Pam Larsen
The Crazy Anne Block was a challenge but we had 20 blocks returned. Good Job Quilters....Blocks won by Rita Buchler. We can't wait to see the quilt Rita.
The February block is a Crazy Quilt Block starting with a silk center. Every single block sold, if even half of them are returned it could be a wonderful quilt If you have any questions please call Charlotte or Kristin.

Do you realize that in 2010 it will be 50 years since the 1960’s began? Think of it. A decade that had such an impact on us is already half a century away. Let’s remember that time in history with a quilt! Your challenge is to make a quilt using the fat quarter of dyed fabric that you purchase from me (for $2.50), that represents something that happened or is representational of the 60’s. You may use colors from the 60’s in a traditional quilt or you may make an art quilt or wall hanging representing an event of the 60’s, as long as you use a recognizable amount of the fat quarter.
· It must be at least 18” x 18” (72” perimeter) and no bigger than 45” x 45” (or 180” perimeter).
· It must be made and quilted by you alone.
· It must be finished. Any unfinished quilts will not be accepted. They are to be revealed at the June 3rd meeting.
You must use a recognizable amount of the fat quarter (I will know!). (If your entry does not follow these guidelines, I have the right to disqualify it from the competition. So please adhere to the challenge rules.)
Don’t be afraid of this challenge. There is so much history and change that happened in the 60’s from the era of Kennedy, exploration of space, pop culture, art, music, Vietnam, Woodstock, and so much more. The opportunities are endless!
The following are the categories in which we will judge our entries.
· Best use of theme - $25 gift certificate
· Best quilting - gift of quilting threads
· Overall favorite - $25 gift certificate
· Best use of embellishments - gift of embellishments
· Most outrageous - $25 gift certificate
If you have any questions, please contact me, Anna Koelewyn.
Remember to have fun!!!!
Hello Fellow Quilters,
So here it is February and soon spring will be here. I don’t know about you but I see buds on my trees and the sound of birds outside my windows. What a joy that brings to my heart as I see that those things that seemed to look dead are alive and well. You know some of our sewing rooms could have been in that same situation and now it’s time to bring them to life! You can start by making a little quilt or a (big quilt) for the Little Quilt Sale in July. Help us out as we begin to think about what each of us can do to contribute to this great cause. It is one of the many ways we raise money to support our community projects like We Care Quilts and Komforters for Kids. I love all the quilts we have received and thank each one of you who has donated to the cause. I can’t wait to see what is yet to come and excited about all your creations. Wishing everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day! Many of you will be getting chocolate which is a great energizer to keep next to that little sewing machine. Until we see you Keep Quilting!

We received a very nice thank you letter and pictures from Lemoore Adult Daycare for the quits that were delivered in December. The quilts are being used at the Daycare center.
This month four completed quilts and two tops turned in. Thank you to Barbara Sindlinger, Wadine Eigenman, Annie Jackson, Diane Mitchell and Mona Bolen. Thank you to those who take tops and to be quilt. We have 6 tops from the Lemoore High students and 3 tops from Diane Gilmartin.
Remember that the goal for the Charity quilts for the remainder of the year is to have quilts to take to the VA hospital in Fresno. They need to be lap quilts (42x54).

The girls were on fire this month with the February ATC theme. This next month it’s all about words: text, words, pages, writing, typed, quotes….
coming up...
March- Text “words, pages, writing, typed, quotes”
April- Go Green “Recycled, reused elements (i.e. trash) not typically associated w/ ATC"”
A few little helpful things on ATC's
*cards are 2.5" by 3.5" each
*always sign your first and last name
*put the date & location of where your cards were made
*give your series a title
*number each card (if working in a series); for example, if you made eight cards “1/8, 2/8, 3/8, etc.”
*trade with how many you made; if you made 5 cards, you should get 5 cards (many ladies are more than willing to trade if they have extra and you didn't get around to making yours or didn't make enough... just don't forget next month!)
*cards are usually three layers: embellished fabric top, middle batting/felt, paper/cardstock backing
*sewing is not mandatory but hey, we are quilters after all; you can use any techniques and materials you want to assemble and decorate your cards
*Use your imagination and whimsy...it's a fun project to do with kids

I'm posting Clue 5 early for those who check. :)
Here's a picture of finished clue #4:

The quilting is done on the opportunity quilt and the binding is being added as we speak. Thanks for all the positive response so far on the quilt and pattern. We think the pattern chosen is going to catch some attention. We had inquiries about the pattern by the artist Sharlene Jorgenson called "Cleopatra's Fan". The tickets and a picture are available. If you need more before the next meeting, please contact Mary Jane Loya We are looking for places that we can display and sell tickets. If you know of any places, please contact Mary Jane Loya. We will also be starting sign ups for the white glove ladies for Best of the Valley quilt show and for help selling tickets during the show.
Mary Jane Loya, Anna Koelewyn and Diane Mitchell
The Round Robin medallions and rows were exchanged in February. Make sure that you keep to the schedule and do your part during the month. When you get behind, it puts the whole group behind and that is unfair to the rest.
Please contact Brenda McCutcheon if you should have any problems.
Last Chance For Retreat Sign Up!
April 22 - 25, 2010 at The Spyglass Inn
I'm already selecting which unfinished sewing projects are going to the Spyglass Inn with me. This will be a small, friendly retreat. None the less, we know it will be a productive time. Two full days, plus two half days of uninterrupted sewing. Call Patty now to let her know if you want to go. (559-925-6003 or 925-1333) Deadline for sign up is March 20th! Also, because we have room, you may invite other quilting friends who you might want to introduce to our guild. Those of you who have already signed up need to call and make your room reservation at 800-824-2612. Let Patty know if you want to share a room and she will try to arrange that for you
The sleeping accommodations are lovely. They hold two quests and the rate is only $98.00 per night. We have been given the reduced rate of $100.00 per day for the room we will use for sewing. That $100.00 will be divided between the number of guild members who attend. Go online and see what a delightful Inn awaits you. Call Patty O'Hare at 559-925-6003 if you are planning to attend or if you have questions.
April 22 to 25, 2010 - 3 -Nights At Spyglass Inn Located in Pismo Beach
The room rate for this retreat will be $98.00 per night for one room with two queen beds, making it very affordable to split with a friend. If you prefer, you may reserve a room all to your self, with one King for the same rate. We can take 10 to 20 women on the retreat. If our guild members reserve 10 guests rooms, the Spyglass Inn will give us the conference room for free. Our sewing machines will be safe and secure as we sleep, locked up until the next morning. You will be responsible for your own meals over the weekend. This will give us the option to dine in the Inn’s restaurant or go back to your room for a bit (refrigerator in each room.), call out for a meal, or grab a friend and take a break at one of Pismo’s delightful eateries. The rooms are spacious. The view is breathtaking. The Spyglass Inn also offers spa services to insure an relaxing getaway with pampering you will not soon forget. The deposit check for $50.00, made payable to Common Threads must be given/mailed to Patty to hold your spot. Take a peek at what awaits you at: www.spyglassinn.com
