GREAT LITTLE QUILT SALE

You just have two more months to get you little quilts to me for the Great Little Quilt sale in July.  This is our opportunity to raise money for our great charity quilt projects.  We need your help!  Thank you to Rose Bagwell, Barbara Sindlinger, and Mary Jane Loya for their donations at the April meeting.  We have some beautiful quilts but we need about 40 more.  If you need labels or have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us.

WE CARE QUILTS

Many thanks to Carol Todd, Kristin Eilers and Bernita Garcia who each turned in one completed quilt.

Since no one picked up quilt kits at the last meeting, we hope you are working on completing the kits already checked out. We have batting and I will have it at The Sewing Room and the guild meetings.

We met on March 15th at the sewing room and those in attendance were Carol Todd, Bernita Garcia, Kristen Eilers, Mary Ann Peterson, Annie Jackson, and Andrea Gassaway. Thank you for coming it was a great day.

We will be meeting again at The Sewing Room April 12, 2008 at 9:30 bring your machine sewing tools.

Mark your calendars we will NOT be sewing in May!

This week we are delivering sixteen (16) beautiful quilts to the Woman’s Shelter and twelve (12) to the dialysis center.

Keep up the good work and keep those quilts coming!

Andrea Gassaway and Mary Ann Peterson

Thanks so much Carol for your generosity. Carol Todd gives “We Care” the use of the “Sewing Room” at no charge.

By Andrea Gassaway and Mary Ann Peterson

According to our bylaws the purpose of We Care Quilts is to provide lap quilts to local groups or individuals who could use a little love and caring at special times in their lives. Candidates for receiving these quilts are provided by Guild members and local community organizations. If you know of anyone who needs a “quilt hug” as they are going through a sickness or difficult times please contact a member of the We Care committee: Andrea Gassaway, Mary Ann Peterson  for one of our made with love quilts.

These quilts are for people who are battling cancer, veterans and people at rest homes. They are for both men and women. Most kits contain 5 yards of material for you to create any design you wish. Patterns are also available to help “inspire” you. A few kits contain a panel (you add a border or two) and some kits just have two pieces of fabric so that you can make an “envelope” quilt. The size to make the quilt is either 45x60 or 45x50. When you finish, don’t forget to add the We Care label.

round robin

You should be receiving your quilt top at the May meeting as all 5 people have had a chance to have their turn at your quilt.  We will reveal them during the meeting, so don't pass the quilt to the person until you are called on stage.

BLOCK OF THE MONTH
The Sister Choice Block of the Month was won by Adena Joseph, she won 10 blocks.

The  block for May is a Tulip. Ladies lets make lots of blocks.

For each block you complete and bring in, you will get a ticket to win all the blocks turned in that night.  No fabric is supplied, therefore this is at no cost to you.  Use your stash, play and have fun.

CHALLENGE 2008

I’m very excited about our 2008 Challenge.  I have been looking for Plaids, Checks and Stripes at the Fabric Stores and there are some wonderful choices out there.

If you are thinking, I don’t do Plaids.  Think again.  Remember this is a Challenge.  It is meant to stretch our creative side.

Remember not to show anyone your project.  We want the voting to be unbiased.  Besides, it is fun to guess who made each quilt.

Call me, or email me, if you have questions.

 Debbie Van Fossen  obsdancer@comcast.net

The criteria for this years challenge is as follows:

  1. Your fabric must consist of only Plaids, Stripes or Checks.  If you are not sure about a particular fabric, please ask me.
  2. Your Quilt must have some Appliqué.  It can be any type of appliqué.  Such as Hand Appliqué, Raw Edge Appliqué,  Machine Appliqué.  It does not matter, but it must have some kind of appliqué.
  3. Your entry must not exceed 144” in perimeter.  It does not have to be rectangle or square.  (If it were square, it could not measure more than 36” X 36”)
  4. You may use any hand or machine techniques you like, but the quilt must be 3 layers and quilted, not tied.
  5. Your Quilt entry must be made by only one person.
  6. Keep your idea a secret so that the voting will be fair and unbiased.
  7. Don’t get stressed over this challenge.  Have Fun!
  8. Your quilt must be delivered to me before our June meeting.

The members that are present at the June Meeting will vote in five categories.    The Most Innovative Entry,  the Best Traditional Entry, the Best Appliqué, the Best Quilting and the Best Interpretation of the Theme.

Let your imaginations fly.  We would like to have a wide variety of entries in our challenge.

If you have questions, you may contact Debbie Van Fossen.

LIBRARY

If you see Dorothy moving books to and from the storage room, please give her a hand.  She has been experiencing some major back pain (surgery even) and should not be lifting.  So say hello, and give her a hand.  She's always looking for input on books to order for the guild's library.   -Barb

ARTISTS TRADING CARDS news

We had eight artists trading cards in April--Deolinda Rhoads,
Charlotte Rogers, Barbara Sindlinger, Adena Joseph, Anna Koelewyn,
Janice Minyard, Debbie VanFossen, and me. We got to teach the
teacher, Cathie Hoover, because she didn't know what ATCs are.
Usually, if I have made extra cards, I gift one to the visiting
presenter as a memento of how unique our Guild is.

Some suggestions for May: the birthstone is emerald, the holiday is
Memorial Day, or something to honor the glorious spring wildflowers
blessing our hills this year. As I, with Deolinda's guidance, am
taking over programs for the next year, we need a new ATC
chairperson. It's the easiest job I've done so I know one of the
artists among us will step up. Remember--"Art washes away the dust of
everyday life."

Sara Kelly Artist Trading Cards are 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" big with a card stock back with your name, date and any other message on it and the front is fabric (backed on felt) and it can be quilted, beaded, painted, thread painted, decorated in any way.

opportunity '08

Purpose:  To raise funds to support operating expenses of the Guild, Speakers and Workshops.  The Opportunity Quilt committee members organize the formation, creation, and construction of a quilt for the community.  Guild members can earn chances to win a gift by helping construct the quilt, selling tickets for the Community quilt, and volunteering to sell tickets at functions like Quilt Shows, etc.

Now that the opportunity quilt is done, it’s time to start selling those raffle tickets.  It will be July before you know it.  We will have several opportunities at other events to display and sell tickets.  One of them is at the Best of the Valley Quilt Show.  However…(isn’t there always a however?) in order to get our table for free, we need to provide docents or white glove ladies and people to man the Opportunity Quilt booth.  For every hour you work, you get a ticket in the guild drawing for a gift.

We will also be bringing our quilt to the Orange Blossom and Fresno quilt guilds to see if we can sell some tickets there.  If you can think of any other venue where we can sell tickets, please let us know.  Call Rita Buchler, Diane Mitchell or Barbara Sindlinger.  And don’t forget to sell tickets.

Also, thank you to those members who helped Diane Mitchell with the quilt: Rita Buchler, Barbara Sindlinger, Pam Larsen, Debbie Van Fossen, and Bethaney Kuenning.

The woman who donated the quilting on the quilt is: Judy McDaniel 559-285-0628.

Thank you, Diane Mitchell
