Common Threads Quilt Guild

Hanford/Lemoore, California

Member Updates

This is where we will post any shows or exhibits that Common Thread Quilt Guild members are participating in.  Or any other special information you might want to share with the general membership.

Best of the Valley has come and gone and our members did very well by just the sheer number of entries accepted as well as ribbons won.  Go to Show and Tell page and see pictures of all the members quilt that were at the show.

2010 Survey Results

Member Information

Of the 32 total surveys, 4 considered themselves beginning quilters, 5 advanced and 22 intermediate and one undecided.  There was also one that said she was between advanced and intermediate and another between beginner and intermediate – so I just put them in the intermediate category.

As for our personal goals, of the 24 who answered this questions, 12 said they want to learn or get better at machine quilting, 4 stated they wanted to learn everything and 4 want to work on art quilts and one of our members wants to write her own book.  There were also a few who didn’t answer at all.  Here are the answers as given in the survey:

 Newsletter & Website:

 Well, only 27 of you read the newsletter, one member said no, one lady said sometimes and the others were left blank (and from what I can tell, they are new members and hadn’t been on the mailing list when this survey was taken.) As far as suggestions, one person said to send it out 1 to 1.5 weeks prior to the meeting but liked that the speakers and programs are on the front page, and another suggestion was to not repeat the meeting.    {speaking for the newsletter person - I can only put articles in that the committee members give to me--you have to remember that not everyone makes the meetings so sometimes the info has to be repeated.  It also serves as a reminder for some of us.}

19 people look at the guilds website at least once a month, some just said occasionally or seldom or every 2 to 3 months. One new member didn’t even know we had one (she does now I hope) and a few put an absolute no on the page.  There were no suggestions to improve or change about the website.

Friendship Groups

9 members want to join a friendship group.  A few responded that they already belong to one or more.  Other than that, the rest were unchecked.

There were 2 surveys with nothing checked.

 As far as costs:

Several checked all 4 prices ($30, $35, $40 or $45) which I assume would mean they would pay whatever (well that’s also what one lady put), but 13 would pay $30; 17 would pay $35; 9 would pay $40 and only 7 would pay $45.  A few put it depended on the class or the teacher on what they would pay and one lady would pay $30 or $35 but doesn’t like it when you have to pay extra for a kit.

As for help or tips for Quilt University (which is a meeting where we have our own members show a technique and members go from area to area to watch and learn), one member put she would show or would like to see Fractured 9 Patch, another said she would show Tri-Recs or the Easy Angle ruler, someone would like Kristin Eilers to show her method of machine appliqué, but most people left it blank or said they weren’t good enough to show something, or commented on how much they liked it last year.

As far as teaching, someone asked for Barbara Sindlinger to teach something, but Barbara wrote No Way Jose on her survey, Janice Minyard said she would lead a class in the Ricky Tims Kaleidescope using his DVD as a guide.  Charlotte Rogers said she was already scheduled to teach a guild class, and Grace Hoya said she’d teach a class using the Tri-Recs Rulers.  Most left it blank or said no or I’m not good enough to teach.  However one did say she was not knowledgeable enough unless it’s origami quilts.

And keeping with the Program questions, these are the responses to what we liked or didn’t like about last years’ programs.  Not everyone responded but those who did, this is what they said.

*One member loved Joe Cunningham’s attitude but didn’t like the one teacher who increased his price at the last minute, and was unable to get a refund.

*Another liked “everything – we have a great guild”

*Three liked Show and Tell but one didn’t like that quilts are too modern – they like traditional quilts.

*One liked the diversity of the programs, and two said they liked the variety.

*One person didn’t like anything about last years’ programs and said there were too many art quilts.

*Then another liked our speakers and the many different ways to quilt but didn’t like getting out late during the winter months.

*One liked seeing other work – all the programs were excellent.

*One just said she liked everything about it and another said she always enjoys the programs.

*Another member was specific and said she liked the trapunto class and the traditional quilt class.

*Another just said there seemed to be a lot of “art” quilts.

 Retreats:

The questions was would you like to go on a retreat with guild members.  Keep in mind that there were a few who didn’t answer and some answered more than one.  The answers were:

No thanks.  I’m not interested in retreats.                                                                                  6

I would like to attend depending on the place and cost (make suggestion):              15

            (See suggestions below)

Yes, but please stay local.                                                                                                               11

Yes, But let’s get away out of the area.                                                                                      6

 Suggestions:

*Dates must be given in advance and not connected to a holiday weekend.

*Back to Bass Lake – it was the best.

*Where ever.

 Opportunities to Serve:

Not one person checked they would be willing to find out what the VP job entails or to volunteer to take the position.

Then when asked if they would like to help with one of the two positions left open, Great Little Quilt Sale and Round Robin, two people said they would be interested in Great Little Quilt Sale.

However when it came to the Charity Quilts there was some positive responses.  There were six that didn’t answer and some people checked more than one.

Yes I can help sort, cut and prepare kits.                                 13

I will attend a Comfort Quilt Group sewing event.                13

Can’t attend the event but will make a quilt.                          6

I will help machine quilt.                                                                    5

And finally, the responses to helping at the Christmas potluck.  22 people didn’t check either and 2 check both:

Yes.  Put me up on the set-up committee                                         8

Yes.  Put me on the clean-up committee.                                          4

(For those who said yes, Patty said she gave your name to the people in charge.)

 Thank you all for participating.
